Marquis de Méricourt Dry White Wine

IGA#: N/A
Also found in Metro stores in QC.
Price: $10.49
Made in: Canada
By: Marquis de Méricourt

A cheap white blended Canadian wine found at the local IGA store. Big 1 litre bottle. The smell is not bad at all. Fruity with the grapes and mixed with apples. The taste has the fruitiness as well and seems not bad at that point. Then, the watery finish comes too soon. Some dryness, and is actually not bad with food (see pic – enjoyed with equivalent quality).

Pelee Island Monarch Vidal VQA

LCBO#: 393405
Price: $11.45
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Pelee Island Vineyard Inc.
Year: 2015

This Ontario Vidal has pear, apple notes with sweetness from the grapes. The taste is quite sweet with the fruits and alcohol is noticeable. A slight dryness comes and help to kill the syrupy aspect of this white wine. Yeast lingers on the tongue. Still, a little too sweet overall to enjoy completely. Exactly like their Monarch Red we did last year, way too rich to be a good one.

Forward Pinot Grigio Riesling

LCBO#: 427344
Price: $11.45
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Pelee Island Vineyard Inc.
Year: 2015

This Canadian blend of Pinot Grigio and Riesling gives out pear notes in the nose at first. Citrus does eventually appear with some sour hints and decent fruity sweetness. The mouthfeel has a nice dryness with the citrus flavours. A little too much yeast lingers in the end, but overall – this is quite drinkable for the price.

Jackson-Triggs Sauvignon Blanc

imageLCBO#: 399410
Price: $10.10
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Jackson-Triggs Vinters

This Sauvignon Blanc is cellared in Canada from imported and domestic wines. The Proprietors’ Selection is their less expensive, easy-going wines. Not as fruity as most Sauvignon Blanc, but it does get there with time. Woody aromas with light alcohol, smoke hints and the grape fruits. The taste is also fruity, but has some bitterness, dryness. Alcohol and the wood. Very reasonable cheap Sauvignon Blanc, but there is better for the price from Chile, South Africa.

Mike Wear The Underdog White Wine VQA

imageLCBO#: 248476
Price: $13.95
Made in: Beamsville, Ontario, Canada
By: Mike Weir Wine

This blended white wine from Canada’s golf player Mike Weir gives out aromas of white grapes, light alcohol and hints of pears. The taste is much more milder, as in watery. Gets better as it warms up, so if you like warmer white wines, you might like this, as nothing is really offensive. Decent fruity sweetness, alcohol, dryness and sourness. All light, but there. Very nice label and an average light blended white wine. Just hard to pay full price for it.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

imageLCBO#: 35386
Price: $19.95
Made in: Marlborough, New Zealand
By: Kim Crawford

Been eyeing Kim Crawford wines for a while, but always a little over our budget. From time to time it comes on special at the LCBO, so this time I jumped on it. Wow, am I glad too ! Bursting with aromas and flavours of tropical fruits. Great to drink alone. Even with red meat, it taste as good. Not much else to say about this great summer white wine. What are you waiting for… just buy it !!

Fuzion Chenin-Chardonnay 2013

20140101-232802.jpgLCBO#: 119800
Price: $7.95
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Fuzion Wines
Varietal: Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay

Fuzion wines are always inexpensive, but always a sure bet. Pours a light golden colour with a fresh pear nose and some light green apples, sugars and alcohol. Pretty close to the same for the flavours. Notes of peach and honeydew as well. The Chardonnay is not too dry, but very well-blended with the Chenin Blanc. Gets a bit too sweet after a while, but still a good summer drinker. Just have it real cold.

Argento Pinot Grigio 2013

20131231-192004.jpgLCBO#: 620492
Price: $9.95
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Argento Wine Company
Varietal: Pinot Grigio
2013

This Argentinian Pinot Grigio smells quite sweet at first, but not the typical fruitiness of this style. After breathing, it does get pretty close to the aromas of a Pinot Grigio. The taste is pretty good right of the top. Slightly dry, fruity, sweet and with a little sourness in the finish. Very, very drinkable for the price.

Amalaya “Esperanza por un Milagro” White Wine

20131216-195753.jpgLCBO#: 270470
Price: $10.95
Made in: Calchaqui Valley, Salta, Argentina
By: Hess Family Estates
Varietal: Torrontes and Riesling
2012

This Argentinian white wine is composed of 85% Torrontes and 15% Riesling (written on label – 90/10 on site). Beautiful fresh fruity and floral aromas with exotic fruits (pears as well) and grassy herbs (even slight mint). The taste is definitely milder. Way milder. Notes of sweetness and citrus (getting better as it breathes) with some alcohol. Much better with food, and could be a good summer wine when you want something lighter, refreshing and fruity. Well worth the price.

Costa Farnel Prosecco

20131215-153152.jpgLCBO#: 358382
Price: $19.95
Made in: Pescara, Italy
By: La Canosa SRL Agroforestale

This Italian Extra Dry Prosecco Sparkling starts off on a wrong note with the cork breaking at the bottom and leaving some pieces around the opening. The bottle is wider than most, so it holds well, but it pours all over. It does smell like cork a bit, but the yeast helps out. Sweet grapes with a little sourness. Even candy strawberries and vanilla after breathing. Pretty much the same for the taste. Not very dry, so goes down easily, but lacking a little blending between the sweetness, fruitiness and the light sourness. And the wood hints from the cork (even though not super corked) are not very pleasant.
