Jackson-Triggs Reserve Sparkling

LCBO#: 217679
Price: $15.95
Made in: Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario
By: Jackson-Triggs Estate Wines
Year: 2017

5 years ago, we reviewed this sparkling under the name “Jackson-Triggs Méthode Cuve Close 2012”, and this is still a favourite for the price. As consistent as usual. Great bubbles, sparkling away, zapping in the mouth. A beautiful blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Loads of well-balanced green apples all over. Just a nice dryness that is not over the top, making this very easy to drink. Again, the yeast is very well taken care of – as in not too tarty.

Kim Crawford Signature Reserve Fizz

LCBO#: 645960
Price: $29.95
Made in: Marlborough, New Zealand
By: Kim Crawford Wines
Year: 2013

After having Kim Crawford a few times before, and really liking their products, thought this would be the same. Unfortunately, it was not. This sparkling had too much yeast in it. In the nose, in the taste. The rest is fine. Mild apple scent. Flavours are a little more on the sourness side of things. Still, apples and the yeast lingers. Because of this, some tartiness. Much preferred the other Fizz wine we tried from Kim Crawford. And this one was part of the Vintages. Disappointing for the price.

Trapiche Reserve Malbec 2018

LCBO#: 614651
Price: $12.95
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Bodegas Trapiche

Another inexpensive Argentinian red wine, which we purchased the 1500ml bottle for $10 more than the 750ml bottle. Still, a nice classy label. The aromas of this one is where this one shines. Woodsy at first, but the cherry notes and hints of plums do come out. Even vanilla is felt with time. The mouthfeel is lightly dry with just a touch of tannins. Seems to get dryer with every sip though. Black cherry notes are tasted, but the flavours are milder. Does seem to taste better alone, than with food. Well done overall – a not pricy, lower sugar content Malbec (13.5% ABV).

Graffigna Centenario Reserve Malbec

imageLCBO#: 230474
Price: $13.95
Made in: San Juan, Argentina
By: Bodega Graffigna
Year: 2013

A nice easy going red wine with any supper. This Argentinian Malbec has aromas of black pepper, plums and hints of leather shoe shine and cherries. The tannins are very soft in this one, but with some nice smooth dryness. Flavours of cherries over the grapes giving a some light sourness with a touch of yeast. Like mentioned, goes well with a good meaty supper and vegetables. Classy label and well worth the price if you are a Malbec fan.

Thorn-Clarke Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV Brut Reserve

imageLCBO#: 280925
Price: $16.95
Made in: South Australia, Australia
By: Az. Thorne-Clarke Wines

This Australian Sparkling comes in a nicely labeled bottle. It seems to have a pink hue. The nose has this Pinot Noir red grape aroma giving some sweetness with some light hints of smokiness (after breathing). The taste starts off on a sour note with a yeast finish. A big yeasty end. Not much other than that. Smells nice, but the taste is not happening. Too much yeast and not much else.

Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

imageLCBO#: 111526
Price: $11.95
Made in: Paarl, South Africa
By: Nederburg Wines

Debating between two inexpensive reds tonight (this one and the Radio Boka) found at the LCBO, and on special. Which one to buy more of to have on hand for the next year. This one being a Cabernet Sauvignon starts off with some tobacco scents and hints of leather over the red grapes. After breathing, this calms down and plums come out. This is the same for the taste. Decent sweetness with a little dryness in the finish. Both wines we will get more for the price, but this one is a notch up in ways of better wines. Will get even more of this one.

Bailly Lapierre Réserve Brut

imageLCBO#: 991562
Price: $19.95
Made in: Burgundy, France
By: Caves De Bailly

This French Sparkling releases a little yeast in the nose at first, but nice fruit comes out. Lots of apples (green, golden delicious) and some pear notes. Some sourness as well which shows up in the middle of the taste. A sweet start and some very mild yeast in the finish. Just a tad of tart in the mouthfeel. Lots of the fruits showing up in the flavours. This is a very well-balanced, fruity Sparkling that goes down very well… and we have nothing negative to say about it. Highly recommended under $20 bubbly.
