Villa Maria Lightly Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc

LCBO#: 429969
Price: $17.95
Made in: Marlborough, New Zealand
By: Villa Maria Estates Ltd.

A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that is lightly bubbly. The aromas are full of fruitiness showing off the grapes of summer. Seems very sweet, but the taste does not show this as much. Citrus flavours with hints of vanilla. Still rich compared to a Sparkling and the yeast is better hidden. Also, the bubbles are not as tiny and abbondant. Crisp, fruity and refreshing for the warm season. Quite nice!

Stoneleigh Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Price: $17.95
Made in: Blenheim, New Zealand

This New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc gives out big fruity nose with grapefruit notes at first. Then the grape kicks in. The taste is fruity as well with some sweetness at the beginning, then some light sourness. All well-blended with some very light yeast tart in the finish. The finish is a little short, but what a great refreshing fruity white wine that is quite easy to drink. Not too sweet, just feels right overall… so when on special, jump on this one.

Kim Crawford Small Parcels Fizz

Price: $29.95

Celebrating a big b-day, decided to try a pricier Sparkling, from a winery we like so far. Sour nose with citrus notes over the white grapes which seems on the sweet side, with hints of candy berries. The taste starts off with the sourness, going through the sugary grapes and finishes with a mix of dry mouthfeel, mild alcohol and tart from the yeast. The aftertaste is the weak spot here. The sweetness and sourness is good, but overall, not the best balanced Sparkling. Especially for the price. Gets better with time, releasing some nice apple notes.

Oyster Bay Sparkling Cuvée Rosé

This Sparkling Rosé from New Zealand has a very light pink colour. Lots of yeasty aromas at first with mild berries. The taste is similar with the light raspberry and strawberry notes. Yeast lingers in the aftertaste. Not too sweet and a good dryness in the mouthfeel. The yeast eventually disappears in the nose, and sugar and vanilla appear. A good dry sparkling with the hints of berry sweetness.

Been eyeing Kim Crawford wines for a while, but always a little over our budget. From time to time it comes on special at the LCBO, so this time I jumped on it. Wow, am I glad too ! Bursting with aromas and flavours of tropical fruits. Great to drink alone. Even with red meat, it taste as good. Not much else to say about this great summer white wine. What are you waiting for… just buy it !!

Sophora Sparkling Cuvée

Price: $19.95
Made in: Aukland, New Zealand
By: Lion Nathan Wine Group

This Sparkling from New Zealand is blended from Chardonnay (52%) and Pinot Noir (48%) grapes. Colour is a little darker than usual with a nice creamy head. Big aromas of apples with hints of vinegar. Things calm down eventually and very light vanilla comes to caress the apples. The taste is a little sour, but mixed with some sweetness. Body seems a little too thick overall, but a little dryness just comes and saves the syrupy mouthfeel. A stronger all-around Sparkling with nothing offensive, but just lacking a bit of balance. Recommended to those who like lots of fruits (apples, grapes) and less dry.

Kiwi Walk Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc

kiwiLCBO#: 270462
Price: $17.95
Made in: Marlborough, New Zealand
By: Yealands Estate Wines Ltd.
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

At first pour, aromas of outdated orange juice (like when it ferments – cause by the yeast). After breathing a bit, the orange juice becomes normal, with notes of grapefruit (and the yeast is gone). Pretty thick mouthfeel overall. Same citrus notes in the taste, a little milder, that is well-balanced between light sweetness and sourness. A touch of lemon and pepper in the finish. If you like hints of orange in your sparkling, you will like this. Or for mimosas lover that do not want to do the orange juice mixing.
