This French Sauvignon gives out mild, kind of weird, citrus aromas. The taste is much better with the Sauvignon Blanc flavours. Citrus, light grassiness with nice fruitiness. Decent dryness, but the finish is quite short. Nothing exceptional, but refreshing as should be. A little too tarty and mild overall.

Sieur d’Arques Première Bulle Brut

LCBO#: 497727
Price: $18.95
Made in: Roussillon, France
By: Sieur D’Arques SAS

A French Bubbly in a green bottle with some pink colours that make this one stand out. Yeasty nose that blends well with the fruitiness of the grapes giving out apple notes with hints of soft vanilla. A nice dry mouthfeel. So well balanced between the fruity sweetness, the mild sourness and some peppery flavours. All-around, a very good Sparkling that is well-worth the price. Would definitely purchase again. A must try.

Château Belgrave Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2012

Price: $53.50

Not sure how we got this, as we do not do wines this expensive. We do reviews of wines easier on the wallet, for “monsieur, madame tout le monde”. Nonetheless, nice classy-looking label and cork. Sweet aromas of dark fruits, mostly plums. Hints of pipe tobacco and light spices. The mouthfeel is kind of weak with very mild tannins. The taste is pretty mild as well with some watery cherry juices and earth notes. Not sure if the purchaser got a good deal or what, as this does not seem a wine of this price. Much better out there for a fraction of the price.

Bestheim Brut Crémant d’Alsace

Price: $19.95
Made in: Alsace, France
By: Bestheim, Les Caves De Bennwihr

This French Sparkling releases mild aromas of apples, grapes with hints of vanilla. Pretty close to the same for the flavours. Dry mouthfeel, pretty crisp. Not crazy in taste, but some citrus creating some light sourness, with some very slight yeast in the finish. This Crémant d’Alsace is quite easy to enjoy. Dry all around, mildly fruity and a great alternative to the real Champagne. Especially for the price.

For those who have noticed, we do not do much French wines. We are of French roots, so nothing against them, but a lot we get here is overpriced for the quality. This one is an exception. Label caught our eye and who does not like a Sauvignon Blanc in summer. Pours a great fruity nose of typical Sauvignon Blanc with hints of smokey wood. Rich sweetness of grapes, well-balanced with the mild dryness and light sourness. Yep, just well-balanced all-around Sauvignon Blanc that we recommend.

Poulet & Fils Crémant de Die Brut

imageLCBO#: 392555
Price: $17.95
Made in: Pontaix, France
By: Earl Cave Poulet Et Fils

A French Sparkling imported in Canada by The Case for Wine. Loads of apples in the aromas. After breathing a while, notes of honey (and maybe sugars) in the nose. The apples are also very present in the taste with some hints of wood, sourness and dryness. Very mild yeast lingers on the tongue. There is a slight metallic note in the flavours which is the only little offensive part. For some, might be a sharp bitterness. Other than that, pretty decent overall.

Bailly Lapierre Réserve Brut

Price: $19.95
Made in: Burgundy, France

This French Sparkling releases a little yeast in the nose at first, but nice fruit comes out. Lots of apples (green, golden delicious) and some pear notes. Some sourness as well which shows up in the middle of the taste. A sweet start and some very mild yeast in the finish. Just a tad of tart in the mouthfeel. Lots of the fruits showing up in the flavours. This is a very well-balanced, fruity Sparkling that goes down very well… and we have nothing negative to say about it. Highly recommended under $20 bubbly.
