Toso Brut Chardonnay

LCBO#: 570390
Price: $15.75
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Pascual Toso
ABV: 12%

A Argentina Brut Sparkling found in the Vintages at the LCBO. Fruity aromas of mostly apples with some hints of pears and yeast. This yeast is what stays on the tongue in the finish. Light tart. Milder fruitiness with the apples giving some nicely blended sourness. This also linger a little. Slightly crisp, but the fact that the yeast is just a little too strong, and the fruity notes not. This does not make this one a good one, but just above average.

Louis Bouillot Perle Noire Blanc de Noires Brut

LCBO#: 464776
Price: $16.95
Made in: France
By: Louis Bouillon
ABV: 11.5%

Had not done a sparkling review in a while, as summer was so busy. Found this French one at the LCBO, and thought this would be a nice start to fall 2019. Lots of apples in the nose, with mostly the green ones. Hints of yeast. This continues in the taste with a milder touch. Hints of honey, but not too sweet and definitely not syrupy. Lightly dry mouthfeel that makes this one go down nicely. Nothing out of bound, and would be very good on a warmer summer day.

Bols Advocaat Egg Liquor

LCBO#: 8532
Price: $23.10
Made in: Amsterdam, Netherlands
By: Lucas Bols Amsterdam B.V.
ABV: 15%

This Dutch liquor is quite similar to eggnog. A very thick eggnog that is more eggs than cream. Warm deep yellow in colour with an orange hue. The nose shows some sweetness from the sugar and blended with the brandy, which gives a little alcohol nose warming. The taste shows the brandy a lot with the alcohol that lingers on the palate. The egg richness is there creaming things. Not as delicious to drink alone because of this, but does well in coffee. Pretty good liquid custard that seems to be popular to make Snowball drinks, or can be topped up with 7-up to make an orange creamsicle.

Barrel Heist Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Price: $6.99
Made in: Lodi, California
By: Barrel Heist Wines
ABV: 14.8%
Year: 2017

Found at Trader Joe’s in Burlington. Aged 4 months in Bourbon barrels, this Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautiful nose of dark fruits with plums, dried prunes, hints of cherries, vanilla, smokey wood and leather. Lots of tannins in the mouthfeel with some nice dryness. The taste shows a little caramel notes and the finish is very short. Some yeast lingers on the tongue. Some bitterness does appear with time, which helps a little. Other than that, smells nicely, but expecting much more from this aging.

La Mascota Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

LCBO#: 292110
Price: $15.50
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Mascota Vineyards
ABV: 14%

This Argentinian red wine from Mendoza smells not too sweet, with notes of darker berries and hints of tobacco. The mouthfeel is smooth and silky, with just a tad tannins in the finish. A decent light dryness. Soft flavours of blackberries and caramel. A slight too smooth to drink alone, but goes very well with food. Seems to get better as it breaths though and easy going for those who prefer milder Cabernet Sauvignon.

Amarula Vanilla Spice Cream Liquor

LCBO#: 635615
Price: $22.55
Made in: South Africa
By: Southern Liqueur Co.
ABV: 15.5%

A nice touch on the already delicious Amaruly Cream Liquor – with Madagascan vanilla and African ginger. Already our second bottle of this, as it mixes very well with coffee. The spices are so nice. It does have a little egg nog smell once it breath out. The spices and sweet creaminess are well-blended together. Again, the same for flavours with the vanilla base that is quite smooth. Great on the rocks or like mentioned – with coffee. We really, really like this one. Love the original one, but this is delicious and works well for fall. Hope this one stays.

Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla Gin

LCBO#: 573956
Price: $30.05
Made in: United Kingdom
By: Diageo PLC
ABV: 41.3%

Our first review on these Tanqueray gin-based spirit. This is one is with notes of bittersweet Seville oranges. Sugar is found in this one, as well as artificial colouring. The gin alcohol nose with the juniper is well-blended with these marmalade oranges. The taste is fairly sweet with the bitterness in the background. Maybe, more fruity than sugar sweet. The gin base is still present and nice. This one is quite easy to drink alone, even though they also recommend tonic.
