Smoky Bay

found at IGA and Metro stores
Price: $11.89 (1L)
Made in: Australia

This Australian red wine has a sweet nose from the cherries, plums, with hints of leather, and some alcohol dryness. The taste is sweet as well with all the dark fruits, but watered-down. Decent light dryness in the mouthfeel. Slightly tarty in the finish. For a real cheap wine, that seems to be a blend, it is not too bad. Not a great one though.

Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut Cuvée

LCBO#: 210633
Price: $14.95
Made in: Australia
By: Jacob’s Creek Wines

This Australia Sparkling has a very nice presentation with a real cork, and cage. The grape nose is pretty sweet with the Chardonnay notes. The taste has a nice sourness to balance the sweetness. The dryness is light and the finish is short. Tart remains on the tongue, with some mild yeast lingering. Nothing too wild and lacking a little dryness to be a great one. Still, quite presentable anytime.

Yellow Tail Red Muscato Bubbles

LCBO#: 429951
Price: $13.95
Made in: South Australia, Australia
By: Casella Wines

This red Sparkling Muscato looks like beet juice with a big pink fluffy head that lasts longer than most. Sweet aromas of berries with hints of sourness to balance things a little. The sweetness is a little stronger in the taste, but at least not really syrupy. Strawberries, raspberries and other berries. The mild dryness in the finish helps out as well. Not too bad for the style, for nothing too fancy.

Beautiful dark skull artsy label that caught our eye but then… nothing. Weak Cabernet Sauvignon overall. Alright, so after breathing an hour, I get some mild Cab aromas with leather, tobacco and the red grapes. The taste does not have much of this though. Earthy, but watery. Not well-balanced red grapes with some tart eventually. Maybe some tannins. Some sweetness, some bitterness (dryness). OK, so it gets a little better with time, and the price represents well the quality. Much better for a buck more.

Price: $10.95

Varietal: Shiraz/Syrah

Written International Winemaker of the year and Australian Producer of the year for the IWSC in 2009 and 2011. Big berry aromas with mild vanilla, cherries and very light leather. Some nice bitter sharp taste with a bit of sourness to balance things. Flavours of cherries, plums with hints of molasses. Very nice sweet berry taste to blend everything. Quite a nice inexpensive Shiraz that goes down beautifully.

Day Trippers Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2012

LCBO#: 280784
Price: $10.10
Made in: Australia
By: De Bortoli Wines
Varietal: Semillion/Sauvignon Blanc

The semillon takes a little over the usual fruity aromas of the Sauvignon Blanc. It is more on the sweet side of thing, reminding us of some Chardonnay. The mouthfeel is wet with just a tad of dryness in the finish. Sweet, sour and zesty with flavours. Citrus, grapes and other refreshing fruits. Great with the salad we just had. Alright nose, but great balanced flavours. Really good for the price.

Varietal: Sparkling White

Always a good-to-go, good price-quality and easy-to-get one for us. The yeast is quite present this time (aroma) at the first pour and in the finish. The nose seems quite sour as well. After breathing, things readjust. Sweet grape nose, well-balanced between the sweetness and sourness for taste. A nice mild dry finish with a little yeast lingering on the tongue. Seems a bit off compared to previous years had, with notes of hazelnuts and coffee and a bit too much yeast remaining. Still, a decent value for the price with Jackson-Triggs Sparkling being one we prefer.
