Château Belgrave Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2012

SAQ#: 12940294
Price: $53.50
Made in: Gironde, France
By: Château Belgrave
Year: 2012

Not sure how we got this, as we do not do wines this expensive. We do reviews of wines easier on the wallet, for “monsieur, madame tout le monde”. Nonetheless, nice classy-looking label and cork. Sweet aromas of dark fruits, mostly plums. Hints of pipe tobacco and light spices. The mouthfeel is kind of weak with very mild tannins. The taste is pretty mild as well with some watery cherry juices and earth notes. Not sure if the purchaser got a good deal or what, as this does not seem a wine of this price. Much better out there for a fraction of the price.

G. Marquis Silver Line Pinot Noir 2012

imageLCBO#: 258673
Price: $19.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Magnotta Winery

This Ontarian Pinot Noir is a deep ruby red, but clear overall. Berry aromas with nice notes of cherries. After breathing, mild leather comes out and beautiful spices. The berries are quite present in the taste, with some caramel hints and tarty yeast lingers. Was good alone, but was great with food with spices and herbs. Some nice dryness, but not too crazy with very mild tannins. Definitely worth trying if you can you find it. In the Vintages at the LCBO.

First off, beautiful presentation with a green bottle, and the label painted over it. To top everything, a scarf-tag around the neck. Now, can this inexpensive red wine hold up for the rest. The nose definitely does, with a powerful aroma of black cherries and peppery spices. The taste was a letdown at first sip, until I had something to eat, and then the flavours really came out. Not too much tannins, not too dry, but well-balanced for these two characteristics. Red berries with mild sweetness and smokiness. Hints of vanilla blending things together. Quite good for the price, so a great one to buy to bring at a friend’s supper.

Vila Regia Douro 2012

imageLCBO#: 464388
Price: $8.00
Made in: Douro, Portugal
By: Sogrape

This Portuguese inexpensive red wine starts off with a nice presentation with its beautiful classy label. The aromas are not too bad with lots of sweetness, some alcohol but hints of burnt wood and leather. The taste starts off sweet at first, but gets watery. Even worst with food. With lots of breathing though, it does get better on its own. Some dryness, some tannins. A little yeast lingers giving notes of nuts. Nothing really bad for the price, so alright if you need to buy a case for a gathering but have a limited budget. Just let it breath a long, long time.

Trius Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage 2012

Price: $12.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Andres Wines Ltd.

Beautiful candy nose with loads of berries, alcohol, hints of leather balanced with oak, giving this one some vanilla. Eventually, cherries come out, and later, plums. Unfortunately, that’s where it stops. The taste is very watered down, and the finish cuts short. It does get a little better with time and food, but nothing close to saving this Cabernet Sauvignon (which we expected a little more bite). One of our favourite wine a few years back was a Trius. Not this one.

Perlage Canah Valdobbiadene Prosecco Brut

Price: $19.95
Made in: Farra di Soligo, Italy

Written 100% Glera grapes on the back label, AKA Prosecco grapes, for this Italian Sparkling. The nose is mild, but very well-balanced between the sweet fruits, the sourness and the hints of yeast. The taste is stronger, with some apples and notes of pears, all mixed with light sourness in the middle, a fruity sweet finish with some blended bitterness, adding dryness. Yeast eventually lingers in the aftertaste. Overall, a pretty good, easy-drinking Sparkling. Just wish there would be less yeast in the end. Beautiful aromas though. and bottle.

Amalaya “Esperanza por un Milagro” White Wine

20131216-195753.jpgLCBO#: 270470
Price: $10.95
Made in: Calchaqui Valley, Salta, Argentina
By: Hess Family Estates
Varietal: Torrontes and Riesling
2012

This Argentinian white wine is composed of 85% Torrontes and 15% Riesling (written on label – 90/10 on site). Beautiful fresh fruity and floral aromas with exotic fruits (pears as well) and grassy herbs (even slight mint). The taste is definitely milder. Way milder. Notes of sweetness and citrus (getting better as it breathes) with some alcohol. Much better with food, and could be a good summer wine when you want something lighter, refreshing and fruity. Well worth the price.
