Château des Charmes Sparkling Rosé 2011

imageLCBO#: 78055
Price: $28.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Chateau Des Charmes

Beautiful light pink colour, this Ontario Rosé pulls out aromas of yeast over the watered berries. The taste is a little more on the sweet side, then dry. The mouthfeel is thankfully not as syrupy as expected from the flavours. The mild dry finish does help. It is always nice to try a wine from a vineyards we have visited before. Good, but a little on the pricy side for what it is.

This VQA white wine has a light golden colour and is composed of 49.2% Chardonnay, 29% Riesling, 16.8% Sauvignon Blanc, 4.4% Musque, 0.4% Pinot Blanc, 0.3% Pinot Noir, 0.1% Pinot Meunier. Sweet and mild sour aromas with hints of pears. The taste is watery and fruity with a tad of sourness on the finish. Was expecting more from this one, but a little too mild overall. Almost has to be drunk at room temperature to enjoyed.

Santa Carolina Petit Verdot Gran Reserva

Price: $15.95
Made in: Rapel Valley, Chile
By: Vina Santa Carolina

We are used to Santa Carolina as inexpensive good easy-drinking wines, so was quite surprised to find this one in the Vintages at the LCBO. Beautiful aromas of red grapes with a smooth sweetness to it. Very light hints of leather. The taste is a little milder than the nose. Light tannins creating a bit of dryness with the grapes. A bit of bite in the finish with the alcohol (on the bitter side) but a watery aftertaste as the short end. Notes of cherries and yeast.

Alvar Cabernet Sauvignon VQA

Price: $14.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Pelee Island Winery
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
2011

Not sure why, but was not expecting much from this one. The label is quite nice though. Does not look like a Pelee Island wine. It does smell decent, but after lots of breathing. Soft leather and tobacco notes. The taste is really the problem. Starts off pretty sweet, but then gets quite acidic with some vinegar taking over. Hard to taste the berries. A little to wet as well, lacking tannins. Gets better with lots of time, but nothing to save this one.

Devil’s Wishbone 80/20 red wine 2011

20131013-221651.jpgMade in: North Marysburgh, Ontario, Canada
By: Devil’s Wishbone
Varietal: Cabernet Franc, Merlot
2011

Thanks to our friend for bringing this one back from the winery. Seems to be one of their first release, blended with 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. Decent aromas with some leather notes and cherries. Hints of sourness and wood and eventually earth. The sourness is not really present in the taste, but the wood does show. This creates some dry mouthfeel. Just not much tannins. The taste is pretty mild though. Kind of watery with a short finish and light yeast lingering. Nothing offensive, but a little too mild to be an average red wine. Does get stronger after breathing a while.

Lighthouse Merlot 2011

Price: $12.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Pelee Island Vineyard
Varietal: Merlot
2011

This Pelee Island Merlot looks and smells unbalanced at first pour, kind of like a homemade wine (slightly murky weird red with aromas all over the place). After breathing a bit, it does get much better. Loads of berries, like cherries (maybe blackberries), with hints of leather and smoked wood. The taste is back to all over the place though. Some sourness, mostly watery, with notes of berries, sugars. Becomes a little dry as it goes which saves a bit the mouth. Mild tannis and a little yeast on the tongue lingering giving some tartiness and nuttiness. Goes down easily, but a VQA ?

Château Ducla Bordeaux Supérieur 2011

20130808-193114.jpgLCBO#: 255067
Price: $15.95
Made in: Bordeaux, France
By: Yvon Mau Et Fils
Varietal: Cabernet et Merlot

This French red wine is made of Cabernet and Merlot grape varieties. It has a beautiful nose with some mild leather and tobacco. Also, notes of black cherries and vanilla from the aging. Well balanced mouthfeel with some nice wetness, but decent dryness in the finish with mild tannins. Black berries as flavours with some wood. All a little milder then the smell. Not big on the French wines we get here (Canada), but this one is quite good and reflects well the description. Very well-recommended.
