Twist of Fate Winemaker’s White

LCBO#: 466318
Price: $9.95
Made in: Canada
By: Constellation Brands Inc.

This Canadian blend is composed of Pinot Grigio, Muscat and Chardonnay. The nose seems quite dry at first pour. Then, the fruity grapes grows and hints of charred barrels show up. The mouthfeel is a little crisp, but becomes syrupy. Grapes and caramel taste with some decent bitterness in the finish to blend things. Decent for the inexpensive price.

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay

LCBO#: 379180
Price: $16.95
Made in: California, USA
By: Robert Mondavi Winery

Chardonnay is not our forte. Started 20 years ago with this grape, but for whites, went to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. This one from the Private Selection comes out good. The vines gives out a sweet fruity nose with alcohol and hints of dry citrus. The taste is also fruity and sweet, but not syrupy. Grapes, apples with mild vanilla and caramel. Light dry finish. Quite a good Chardonnay if this is your style. Even better with food.

Pierre Sparr Crémant d’Alsace Chardonnay Brut

imageLCBO#: 416040
Price: $18.95
Made in: Alsace, France
By: CVB Maison Pierre Sparr Successeurs
Varietal: Chardonnay

This Crémant d’Alsace made of Chardonnay grape reveals yeast at first pour which disappears with time, letting the lemon citrus notes ring with the sweet grapes. The taste seems infected at first with a sour notes that is not real nice. This luckily goes away and the Sparkling balances itself with the fruity grapes showing some sweet juices. Hints of citrus and alcohol. Light yeast tartiness lingers. Not bad, but not worth the price… and the waiting to blend everything.

Thorn-Clarke Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV Brut Reserve

imageLCBO#: 280925
Price: $16.95
Made in: South Australia, Australia
By: Az. Thorne-Clarke Wines

This Australian Sparkling comes in a nicely labeled bottle. It seems to have a pink hue. The nose has this Pinot Noir red grape aroma giving some sweetness with some light hints of smokiness (after breathing). The taste starts off on a sour note with a yeast finish. A big yeasty end. Not much other than that. Smells nice, but the taste is not happening. Too much yeast and not much else.

Fuzion Chenin-Chardonnay 2013

20140101-232802.jpgLCBO#: 119800
Price: $7.95
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Fuzion Wines
Varietal: Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay

Fuzion wines are always inexpensive, but always a sure bet. Pours a light golden colour with a fresh pear nose and some light green apples, sugars and alcohol. Pretty close to the same for the flavours. Notes of peach and honeydew as well. The Chardonnay is not too dry, but very well-blended with the Chenin Blanc. Gets a bit too sweet after a while, but still a good summer drinker. Just have it real cold.

Santa Carolina Reserva Chardonnay 2012

20121105-205238LCBO#: 304022
Price: $11.95
Made in: Chile
By: Vina Santa Carolina
Varietal: Chardonnay
2012

Part of the Casablanca Estate Reserva series (aged for 6 months in french oak barrels). Golden colour with full, fresh fruity (pears, grapes) and sweet aromas. The taste really comes out with food. Without it, slight watery finish. With it, well-balanced between the sweetness and mild sourness. All fruity with hints of alcohol. One of the better Chardonnay we have had, and a sure thing for the price. Was good with the creamy pastas we had.

Well balanced pricy real Champagne. Mild fruity scent and a little sourness in the taste. Light dry aftertaste but overall, smooth and very well-balanced.

This champagne was perfect to start a new year.
