Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $13.90
Made in: Colchagua Valley, Chile

Year: 2013

Quite a classy looking label from a Chile winemaker. Aromas of berries from the Shiraz at first, then twirl the glass and out comes the Cabernet Sauvignon notes with leather and tobacco. The taste is a little milder, kind of watered-down, but still decent with more of the shiraz characteristics (plums, cherries). What helps is the vanilla from the oak ageing. Good enough tannins in the finish with a dryness that seems to get sharper as we progress. A good red wine, but just lacking a little something. A little more Sauvignon punch.

This Italian Sparkling Rosé is a low alcohol one at 6.5%, so this mean this will be a sweet one. The first big smell that comes out of this is red wine vinegar. This calms down after breathing letting the prune, apples and other berries show up. These same fruits are found in the taste. The good thing here is that the sweetness does not linger, as in not syrupy. The finish is pretty quick, so the fruit seems real, not like a cheap one with sugars. If you are into these sweet bubbly rosé, this one is actually nice… especially for the price.

Errazuriz Max Reserva Sauvignon Blanc

Classy label for this Chilean white wine. Wow ! Loads of fruits in the nose. Tropical fruits, grapes and mild sourness. The sourness shows a little more in the taste, at first. Covers the sweetness of the fruits. Some nice dry sharpness without being dry in the finish. A little watered-down but overall a real nice Sauvignon Blanc and quite enjoyable for our first of 2015.

La Jara Organic Prosecco Brut

This organic Sparkling won Gold in Germany for The Great International Organic Wine Award in 2014. Nice yeast aromas giving out notes of bananas. After a while, the fruits come out with apples, white grapes and soft sourness. This sourness is there at first in the taste, but goes down quickly, going through the apples and finishing with light yeast on the tongue. Mild tart in the mouthfeel and lightly bodied. It is quite nice overall for an organic Sparkling. Some are too different. This one fits well among the non-organic.

Alright, pulling an older red wine from the cellar and see if still good. Thankfully, it was a fake cork, so not corked. Colour is a little weird, like some red ruby port with a touch of brown. If this wine turned on a special side, it is the plum side. Hints of cherries in the nose with leather and the plums. The taste is mostly on the plum side, but beery notes are present. We have to say, this is a wine that got old nicely. Maybe the taste is not as powerful as fresh, but still pretty drinkable.

Rib Shack Red Vintage Blend

Price: $12.85
Made in: Western Cape, South Africa

Holy Moly this smells like candy ! Not complaining, but smells like those good bonbon that have a swirl of vanilla and berries. With time, this fake smell disappears and a blend of aromas of the wood chips, vanilla, burnt wood, berries and leather. The taste is mild at first, but gets stronger after breathing a while. A little dry and small tannins. Not as vanilla, not as fake. Lots of berries, lots of grapes. Seemed like an Australian wine at first, but finishes like a decent South African wine that is always good for the price. Just does not have a label like one.

Celebrating our first day on the deck of 2015. It’s been a long, bad winter. This makes us happy. Along with the sun, this Sparkling gives out aromas of yeast, but the apples take over quickly. The same fruit is found in the taste well-blended with the grapes. Starts sweet, goes through some sourness to finish a little dry with some yeast tart on the tongue. An easy drinking, well-balanced above average Sparkling. Well recommended for a group bubbly gathering.
