Torresella Prosecco

Price: $14.95
Made in: Veneto, Italy

This Italian Prosecco Sparkling smells yeasty at first pour. Mild notes of apple appear with time. The taste is a little stronger with some sourness, some sweetness and some fruitiness. The alcohol is felt as well, so not really well-blended and hints that are metallic from the water. The bubble are pretty big for a bubbly, fizzing like some pop instead of the nice tiny bubble carbonation it should be. Nutty yeast lingers on the tongue. Nothing too off-balanced, but still lacking a bit in this department.

KWV Cathedral Cellar Brut

imageLCBO#: 296426
Price: $16.95
Made in: Paarl, South Africa
By: KWV
Year: 2010

Reviewed this one last year, but this is the 2010 edition and seems to be better rated. Also, we are KWB fans, so why not ? Looks like the oranges are better blended this year with the yeast that gives out hints of vanilla and some dry grapes sweetness. A little sourness in the flavours with the grapes, a dry middle and some light yeast lingering adding some nuttiness. We would have to say that this is better balanced than last year’s version. Good for the price !

KrimSekt White Semi-Sweet Sparkling

imageLCBO#: 206441
Price: $19.95
Made in: Crimea, Ukraine
By: Artemovsk Winery

A Sparkling from Ukraine this Sunday. OK. This semi-sweet bubbly is made from Riesling, Pinot, Chardonnay and Aligote grapes grown in the Crimean peninsula. First off, the cork was extremely hard to pop. Hard to turn, no pressure pushing the cork up and out. Then it broke halfway. Not a good start. Yeasty nose and then pretty sweet grape notes. The taste starts off very sweet, but not too syrupy, so goes into a decent finish. Mild yeast lingers on the tongue. Not sure all those grapes work well together, as something in the middle seems a bit off. Still, not a bad sweeter Sparkling, but not worth the price.

Osbourne Solaz Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

imageLCBO#: 610188
Price: $11.45
Made in: Tolado, Spain
By: Osbourne Selección S.A.U.
Varietal: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon

This inexpensive Spanish red wine is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, but don’t let the price fool you. Beautiful rich nose with cherries and oak vanilla, all helped with some sugars. Most times with these wines, you have nice aromas but weak taste. Not this one. Good berry flavours with strawberries and cherries. The Cabernet Sauvignon is felt with some mild leather and tobacco. Alright, the nose might be candied, but the taste is not. All together, this wine is quite nice for the price.

Poulet & Fils Crémant de Die Brut

imageLCBO#: 392555
Price: $17.95
Made in: Pontaix, France
By: Earl Cave Poulet Et Fils

A French Sparkling imported in Canada by The Case for Wine. Loads of apples in the aromas. After breathing a while, notes of honey (and maybe sugars) in the nose. The apples are also very present in the taste with some hints of wood, sourness and dryness. Very mild yeast lingers on the tongue. There is a slight metallic note in the flavours which is the only little offensive part. For some, might be a sharp bitterness. Other than that, pretty decent overall.

Schlumberger Sparkling Brut

imageLCBO#: 284596
Price: $16.95
Made in: Vienna, Austria
By: Schlumberger GMBH

Might be one of our first Austrian Sparkling. Nice presentation… clean and classy. Mild aromas of pear, apples and yeast. The taste is slightly fruity at first, but falls short quite quickly only leaving very light yeast lingering. So, not much here. Pretty dull overall, but nothing offensive. Mild dry mouthfeel with a little sourness after breathing. Very light hints of oranges and honey appear when it warms up. One that we will enjoy with Chambord raspberry liqueur, as this will add some flavour.
