Rex-Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon

20131127-204534.jpgPurchased at Walgreens in Vegas
Price: $6.99 (US)
Imported and bottled by Constellation Imports (from Chile)
By: HRM Rex-Goliath
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Had this on our last trip to Nashville. Liked the logo, but was not being too optimistic about it, as the price was pretty low. After liking it, decided to rate this one on this trip to Vegas. Mild Cab nose with some watered-down leather and so-so grapes. Where it gets a little better is the taste. It is because vanilla notes are added to the fruit. Unlikely oak at this price, but nonetheless, pretty good for the cheap price. Still, not a winner by any means. Bodega Norton is the one to bring to someones’ party.

Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Carte Blanche

Price: $44.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery
Vintage 2008

This Vintage Canadian Sparkling comes in a box and pours a creamier white head than most. Beautiful aromas of apples and grape with just enough yeast to balance things. The taste starts off kind of mild with some sourness, but this one gets quite sour in the middle to linger a bit. So, if you like a sour sparkling, this one is definitely for you. Pretty good for the rest, but not sure about the pricing and marketing behind this one.

Wolf Blass Red Label Shiraz Cabernet

20131114-195148.jpgLCBO#: 311795
Price: $14.95
Made in: Nuriootpa, Australia
By: Wolf Blass Wines
Varietal: Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon

It’s been a while since our last Australian red wine, and we are fans of their oaky-vanilla wines. This one is a first for not being too vanilla-ish. It actually was not really good with food, as it was too thin. Alone, it becomes better with mild Sauvignon notes of tobacco and leather. The body is medium-light, with a little tannins. Taste of red berries with hints of wood and tobacco in the finish. The very light red fruits lingers a bit. Like the label says, “soft and smooth red wine blends” and drinkable for those who like it mild.

La Vieille Ferme Rouge Récolte 2009

20131110-204736.jpgLCBO#: 263640
Price: $11.90
Made in: Orange, France
By: La Vieille Ferme
Varietal: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault

This French red wine is kind of dull at first. After breathing a while, it does release some characters. Mild fruit nose with prunes, dates and then some very light tobacco. Wet mouthfeel but with a little dryness in the finish. The same dark fruits in the nose are present in the taste with light cherries and blackberries. The yeast comes out in the aftertaste with the dryness continuing. This is an easy drinking red wine which does not offend, as it does not have any punchiness to it.

Kittling Ridge Icewine and Brandy

20131110-181231.jpgLCBO#: 558999
Price: $19.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Kittling Ridge Estates Winery

This Canadian blend of Icewine and Brandy is always a nice dessert treat for us, as the Brandy (as sweet as it is) takes away from the over sweet Icewine. Wood notes at first scent, then lots if caramel. Citrus and alcohol hints come out eventually. Sweet taste, but the mouthfeel is not as syrupy as Icewine alone. Slight dryness in the finish with some light bitterness balancing the sweetness. Mild nuttiness in the aftertaste. A nice treat overall that is good for a sweetooth, but not overly sweet.

Royal Ackerman Crémant de Loire

20131110-161752.jpgLCBO#: 352229
Price: $19.95
Made in: Loire, France
By: SA Ackerman

At first pour, loads of yeast are present around the room. After breathing a bit, the nose becomes as mild as can be with not much. A little yeast and citrus creating some sourness.
The taste starts on a sour note and slowly disappears into the aftertaste. The sweet grapes balance things well but the yeast comes coating the mouthfeel in the finish. Not as good as the Vouvray Domaine du Clos de l’Epinay we had last week, from the same region, for roughly the same price.

Cottage Block Sauvignon Blanc Riesling

20131107-191007.jpgLCBO#: 296574
Price: $12.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Strewn Inc.
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling

This Ontario white wine is a nice blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The Riesling being on the sweet-side and not the dry one. Very sweet nose with the grapes and a little alcohol. The taste is little less sweet with a nice tropical fruits flavour and a tad of yeast in the aftertaste. Good citrus notes as well. Pretty good overall (especially for the price), but might be a little too sugary for some.
