Curious Beasts Blood Red (Rouge Sang)

20131027-180943.jpgSAQ code: 12109986
Price: $18.95
Made in: California, USA
By: Truett Hurst
Varietal: Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel
2012

Got this red wine at the SAQ as the wrapper around the bottle caught our eye. Had a pirate kind of feel, tied up around the neck of the bottle with an elastic. Smells like nothing at first, as really too mild. After breathing half-an-hour, it does release cherries, black berries and some mild leather. The mouthfeel is a little too tarty with the yeast. The nose started milder than the taste, but eventually beats it. Still, nothing really good, but a nice packaging. Inked blood along the cork. That’s nice.

Totus Tuus Cava Brut Reserva

Price: $15.95
Made in: Madrid, Spain
By: Bodegas Matilde

This Spanish bubbly is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 18% Xarello, 18% Macabeo, 18% Parellada and 6% Pinot Noir. Mild yeast aromas well-blended dry, sweet and sour grapes. Start on the sweet-side flavour but goes quickly into a nice dryness and the finish is slightly sharp (Pinot ?), making this one interesting. Small amount of yeast lingering giving some hints of nuts. Pretty good for the price with a nice finish.

Devil’s Wishbone 80/20 red wine 2011

20131013-221651.jpgMade in: North Marysburgh, Ontario, Canada
By: Devil’s Wishbone
Varietal: Cabernet Franc, Merlot
2011

Thanks to our friend for bringing this one back from the winery. Seems to be one of their first release, blended with 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. Decent aromas with some leather notes and cherries. Hints of sourness and wood and eventually earth. The sourness is not really present in the taste, but the wood does show. This creates some dry mouthfeel. Just not much tannins. The taste is pretty mild though. Kind of watery with a short finish and light yeast lingering. Nothing offensive, but a little too mild to be an average red wine. Does get stronger after breathing a while.

Passion of Portugal Reserva Red

Price: $8.25
Made in: Alentejo, Portugal
By: Casa Santos Lima
Varietal: Syrah, Tinta Roriz and Barroca
2012

This inexpensive Portuguese blended red wine has Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Syrah grapes. There is a tag on the front label that says Or (Gold) Coupe des Nations Québec 2013 award. It has very nice aromas with mild leather, tobacco and dark fruits. The taste is good as well, but very mild at first. With time though, it becomes quite good. Light tannins, light dryness and plum notes. All of this make this one a superb red wine for under $10.

Grande Cuvée 1531 de Aimery

Price: $19.95

We like these Crémant de Limoux Sparkling and this one is no exception. Sweet fruity nose with some apples, grapes, sour citrus and hints of peach. Mild creamy mouthfeel and not too dry. The taste is very well-balanced between the sweetness, the sourness and the light dryness. At first, this bubbly is more on the sweet side, but with time, it goes on the sour side. The yeast is very well-blended in all departments making this one a winner. Highly recommended for easy drinking in the under $20 range. Would buy more.

Emiliana Adobe Reserva Merlot

Price: $12.95
Made in: San Antonio Valley, Chile
By: Vinedos Emiliana S.A.
Varietal: Merlot

This is one of our first Organic wine experience (the first one being this same winery, last year, with their white). Smells weak at first, but gets stronger with time. Cherries with a little tobacco. The taste unfortunately stays mild. Decent plums and berries, but finishes quickly and only tart is left on the tongue. Good in the way that it does not offend because it is organic. Just too mild overall.

Kopke Fine Ruby Port

Price: $14.90
Made in: Portugal
By: C.N. Kopke & Co Ltd

Big sweet fruity aromas of berries, grapes, with notes of plums and cherries. Pretty much the same for the taste with a bigger sweetness at first, but slowly calming down with the plums. There are hints of Cabernet Sauvignon with the tobacco and leather. This adds a lot with time to balance things. Quite easy to drink, even with some alcohol showing a bit, here and there. Let this one breath and it is definitely a great port for the price.
