Lighthouse Merlot 2011

20130829-202530.jpgLCBO#: 612622
Price: $12.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Pelee Island Vineyard
Varietal: Merlot
2011

This Pelee Island Merlot looks and smells unbalanced at first pour, kind of like a homemade wine (slightly murky weird red with aromas all over the place). After breathing a bit, it does get much better. Loads of berries, like cherries (maybe blackberries), with hints of leather and smoked wood. The taste is back to all over the place though. Some sourness, mostly watery, with notes of berries, sugars. Becomes a little dry as it goes which saves a bit the mouth. Mild tannis and a little yeast on the tongue lingering giving some tartiness and nuttiness. Goes down easily, but a VQA ?

Santa Carolina Reserva Chardonnay 2012

20121105-205238LCBO#: 304022
Price: $11.95
Made in: Chile
By: Vina Santa Carolina
Varietal: Chardonnay
2012

Part of the Casablanca Estate Reserva series (aged for 6 months in french oak barrels). Golden colour with full, fresh fruity (pears, grapes) and sweet aromas. The taste really comes out with food. Without it, slight watery finish. With it, well-balanced between the sweetness and mild sourness. All fruity with hints of alcohol. One of the better Chardonnay we have had, and a sure thing for the price. Was good with the creamy pastas we had.

Cono Sur Pinot Noir 2010

Price: $10.95
Made in: Chile
By: Vina Tocornal
2010

At first pour, this Pinot Noir seemed watery and dull. Then food, then breathing. Leather notes, dryer mouthfeel, hints of strawberries and cherrie for taste, giving out some slight sourness and earth tones. Mild tobacco in the finish. Starts off weak but does get much better. Like most Cono Sur, always a great buy.

Santa Julia Organic Brut

20130825-130210.jpgLCBO#: 314237
Price: $14.85
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina
By: Bodega Santa Julia

This Organic Argentinian sparkling has a big nose of the yeast, but well-blended with the real smelling fruit, mostly the grapes. At their natural state. Notes of the vines as well (like fresh wood). The taste starts off a little sweet, but sourness gets in the middle and the fruit finishes things. What lingers in the aftertaste is mild yeast, giving hints of nuts and wood. The aromas eventually give out some sweetness and light sourness. This is actually a nice balanced Organic sparkling, and really not more expensive than normal ones (so well worth the buck). Still, sulfites are found in here.

Santa Margherita Valdobbiadene Prosecco

20130811-153522.jpgLCBO#: 687582
Price: $17.95
Made in: Veneto, Italy
By: Santa Margherita

Scotiabank collaborates with this Italian sparkling in Canada to give 50 cents of the sale of this bottle to AIDS Walk for Life. Yeasty nose with lots of apples at first pop. Then, it softens to bring out some sweetness with honey and peach notes, and some watermelon. The taste is a little milder though. A little milder, but very well-balanced still. Sweet, dry, fruity with the other side blending well and some light sourness and wetness. Not overpowered by anything special, but goes down nicely. Presentable to anyone at a party.

Château Ducla Bordeaux Supérieur 2011

20130808-193114.jpgLCBO#: 255067
Price: $15.95
Made in: Bordeaux, France
By: Yvon Mau Et Fils
Varietal: Cabernet et Merlot

This French red wine is made of Cabernet and Merlot grape varieties. It has a beautiful nose with some mild leather and tobacco. Also, notes of black cherries and vanilla from the aging. Well balanced mouthfeel with some nice wetness, but decent dryness in the finish with mild tannins. Black berries as flavours with some wood. All a little milder then the smell. Not big on the French wines we get here (Canada), but this one is quite good and reflects well the description. Very well-recommended.

Beaumont des Crayères Champagne

20130804-165841.jpgLCBO#: 903443
Price: $44.95
Made in: Champagne, France
By: Champagne Beaumont Des Crayeres

Creamy white head with a decent yeast nose, blended with sour citrus notes and sweet grapes. The taste starts on a big sour punch, but goes into the light fruit. Wet mouthfeel with a little dryness in the finish. This is one of the only Champagne we have had, bought here (and not France) that we really enjoyed. Very well-balanced overall.
