Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

Price: $30.95
Made in: Rochester, NY

Beautifully packaged in a clear bottle with an old-school label. Really liked the plastic over the cap (wish we could of kept a bit of it – see photo). Also, came with a nice keychain. Pours a dark brown colour with a lot of alcohol in the nose. Notes of cola and vanilla. The alcohol eventually softens, but there is still some burning in the mouthfeel. Sweet aromas like maple syrup and butterscotch come out with time. Roasted grain taste with molasses, brown sugars, cloves and hints of anise and vanilla (from the oak). This double charred blackened oak rum is quite pleasant once left breathing, but if you are looking for something a bit smoother… release “The Kraken” (its competition – also reviewed on here).

Fuzion Alta Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2012

Price: $9.95
Made in: Argentina

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Tried this wine when it was the 2009 and it was not bad, but was lacking in the taste department. The scent has the typical leather, red grapes aromas. The mouthfeel has light tannins and the taste is still a tad too mild. It does seem a bit better than the 2009 version. So, recommended for the price and for those who like their cab a bit less punchy.

This New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc has a full fruity nose with citrus notes. Fresh tasting with lively grape flavours and hints of grapefruit and a mild sourness in the finish. A great white refreshing fruity wine.

Well balanced pricy real Champagne. Mild fruity scent and a little sourness in the taste. Light dry aftertaste but overall, smooth and very well-balanced.

This champagne was perfect to start a new year.

A bright pear nose with notes of peaches getting stronger as it breathes. The taste is a bit milder with some sweetness and a light dry finish. Nice on its own, but better with food. Pretty good overall for the price and nice to try a little Torrontes grapes.

Seemed like a weak red wine at first, but after breathing a while, this one became quite good… especially for the price (and being from Italy). Milder nose, but still a bit of bite, with tobacco, leather, burnt wood and the fruit (grapes). Oily mouthfeel with a little tannins, but mostly the wetness taking over. Decent taste with the leather and grapes. A little dryness appears in the finish. Overall, a pretty interesting, inexpensive, wet and dark red wine.

Château des Charmes Sparkling Brut

Price: $22.95
Made in: Ontario, Canada
By: Chateau Des Charmes
Varietal: Sparkling White

Estate Bottled, Méthode Traditionnelle. Yeasty nose at first, but does fade out to let out a mild sweet grape aroma, hints of apples and a little alcohol. The taste is very well-balanced between some sweetness, sourness and dryness. Notes of citrus with a mild yeast aftertaste. Oily, nicely bodied, mouthfeel, kind of creamy. This sparkling blended with chardonnay and pinot noir is great on its own. This was a nice treat for us, being that we have recently visited this winery. A must try Canadian bubbly.
